Excess Baggage Fees

Flights to and from USA (including Guam), Canada, Mexico or Brazil:

A single excess baggage charge applies to each piece of checked baggage that exceeds the free baggage allowance. For economy and Premium Economy passengers (excluding flights to/from Brazil), if each piece exceeds 50 lbs/23 kg but is not more than 70 lb/32 kg, an extra charge of PY5,000 or $50 USD per piece applies.

  • Guam: 8,300 yen
  • Honolulu, Kona: 16,200 yen
  • Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles: 19,800 yen
  • Chicago, New York, Mexico City: 22,000 yen
  • Sao Paulo: 34,800 yen

Fees in yen, see XE.com for currency conversion rates.

Flights to and from places other than USA (including Guam), Canada, Mexico or Brazil:

Checked baggage weighing in excess of the free baggage allowance will be charged at a rate per kilogram equivalent to 1.5% of the highest normal direct adult one-way economy class fare in effect on the date of issuance of an excess baggage ticket. (If there are two types of normal fares for Japan departure, the higher fare will apply.) For example, assuming normal economy class fare (adult one-way) between Tokyo and London is 513,000 yen, and excess baggage weight of 10 kg:

  1. 513,000 yen x 1.5% = 7,695 yen
  2. Excess baggage charge of 7,695 yen per kilogram
  3. 7,695 yen x 10kg = 76,950 yen

The excess baggage charge in the above example is 77,000 yen (rounded up to nearest hundred yen).

Sports Equipment

Some checked items, such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements while others may be checked in lieu of one of your checked bags. If you plan to travel with sporting equipment, contact Japan Airlines directly to confirm packing regulations and fees or visit their Baggage Information Page.
