Carry-On Allowance: 1 Bag + 1 Personal Item

Each passenger is allowed to carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse or briefcase. Assistive devices and outer garments do not count as personal items. All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you and adhere to the following requirements:

  • Maximum Dimensions of Carry-on Luggage: 45 linear in/114 cm (length + width + height)
  • Maximum Weight of Carry-on Luggage: 40 lb/18 kg

Note: Delta Air Lines gate or flight personnel may further limit carry-on baggage based on available stowage space. Approximate* limiting dimensions of these areas:

Passengers are allowed 2 checked bags free of charge as long as each bag adheres to the following requirements:

  • Maximum Dimensions: 62 linear inches/157 cm (length + width + height)
  • Maximum Weight: 50 lb/23 kg

*BusinessElite and first class passengers are allowed 3 checked bags weighing up to 70 lbs each.

*Passengers traveling to/from Key West and Marathon, Florida are limited to one checked bag.

*The free weight allowance is 70 lb/32 kg for tickets purchased in Brazil, or for tickets purchased in Japan when traveling to/from Brazil.

For tickets purchased May 5 - November 5, 2008:

Passengers are allowed 1 checked bag free of charge

  • Second checked bag: $50

Bags must still adhere to the size and weight requirements:

  • Maximum Dimensions: 62 linear inches/157 cm (length + width + height)
  • Maximum Weight: 50 lb/23 kg

*BusinessElite and first class passengers are allowed 3 checked bags weighing up to 70 lbs each.

*The free weight allowance is 70 lb/32 kg for tickets purchased in Brazil, or for tickets purchased in Japan when traveling to/from Brazil.

For tickets purchased on or after November 5 for travel on or after December 5, 2008:

There is no free checked bag allowance.

  • First checked bag: $15
  • Second checked bag: $25

Overweight Baggage Fees

  • Fee for any bag weighing 51-70 lb: $50
  • Fee for any bag weighing 71-100 lb: $100

Bags weighing more than 100 lb will not be accepted. Bags that exceed the allowance in more than one category, will be charged all applicable excess fees.

Oversize Baggage Fees

Fee for any bag between 62-80 in: $100

Bags with overall dimensions that exceed 80 inches will not be accepted. Bags that exceed the allowance in more than one category, will be charged all applicable excess fees.

Excess Baggage Fees

  • Fee for additional bags (within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico): $75 each
  • Fee for additional bags (all other destinations): $125 each

Sports Equipment

Some checked items, such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements while others may be checked in lieu of one of your checked bags. If you plan to travel with sporting equipment, contact Delta Air Lines directly to confirm packing regulations and fees.
