What is Unaccompanied Minor Service?

Young children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered to be Unaccompanied Minors. Most airlines provide a service to assist these children from their point of departure to their final destination.

What age does my child have to be to qualify as an Unaccompanied Minor?

Domestic Flights

The service is mandatory for children ages 2-12 traveling without an adult or relative up to the third degree (grandparents, great-grandparents, brothers and sisters, and uncles and aunts), providing a document that proves the family bonds or an a adult duly authorized (judicial authorization) by the father, mother, or legal guardian. Children ages 12-18 years are not required to travel as unaccompanied minors, but the service is optional for this age group as well.

Children under 2 years of age are not allowed to travel unless accompanied by an adult or relative up to the third degree (grandparents, great-grandparents, brothers and sisters, and uncles and aunts), providing a document that proves the family bonds or an a adult duly authorized (judicial authorization) by the father, mother, or legal guardian.

International Flights

Minors ages 5-18 years of age: Minors traveling with only one parent must present judicial or certified authorization by the other parent or legal guardian with certified signature. In case the minor travels alone, it will be necessary to have a judicial order.

Minors ages 2-5 years of age: For a minor traveling accompanied by one parent it will be necessary to have an express judicial authorization or a document signed by the other parent or by an authorized person with certified signature. In case the minor travels alone a judicial order will be required and the presence of one extra crew member to accompany the child.

The authorization issued at a public notary and the authorization given by the judge are valid for 60 days (round trip).

In case the minor has double citizenship, s/he must show his valid Brazilian and foreign passports. S/he may board without a visa if the citizenship he has, besides the Brazilian one, does not require an entry visa into the country of destination.
