Carry-On Allowance: 1 Bag + 1 Personal Item
Each passenger is allowed to carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse or briefcase. Assistive devices, outer garments, pillows, blankets, books, and newspapers do not count as personal items. All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you and adhere to the following requirements:
- Maximum Dimensions of Carry-on Luggage: 45 linear in/114 cm (length + width + height) and cannot exceed any of the following measurements: 22" long x 14" wide x 9" tall or 114cm (56 x 35 x 23 cm)
REMINDER: Bulkhead seats do not have underseat storage during take-off and landing.

For domestic* economy class tickets purchased on or after February 1, 2010:
- 1st Piece: $25 each way
- 2nd Piece: $35 each way
Effective Feb. 10, 2011, for the Caribbean and Central America to/from the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Europe and India:
- Economy Class: May check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $30 each way within size and weight limitations.
Each bag must adhere to the below requirements:
- Maximum Dimensions: 62 linear inches/157 cm (length + width + height)
- Maximum Weight: 50 lb/23 kg
*The changes apply for travel on American Airlines, America Eagle, and AmericanConnection® flights within the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Passengers on international flights may check one bag free of charge. Business and First class Passengers may check three bags free of charge. See aa.com for full list of exceptions to the checked bag fee.
Excess Baggage Fees
- $150 per piece each way for the 3rd and any additional bags
Overweight Baggage Fees
Fee for any bag weighing 51-70 lb: $100
Fee for any bag weighing 70-100 lb: $200
Bags weighing more than 100 lb will not be accepted.
*The overweight charge for bags that weigh 50.1 to 70 pounds will be waived for all oneworld Emerald customers, which includes American Airlines Executive Platinum.
Oversize Baggage Fees
Fee for any bag between 62-125 in: $200
Bags with overall dimensions that exceed 126 inches will not be accepted.
Some checked items, such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements while others may be checked in lieu of one of your checked bags.
