American Airlines Boeing 737-800 Vers. 2 (738)
American operates 133 of this aircraft type in its fleet, with 73 on order. The aircraft is slowly replacing American's older MD80 fleet. The new Boeing Sky Interior (BSI) featuring new LED lighting, larger overhead bin space and sculpted side walls can be found in this seating configuration. The BSI interior is arriving on new 737-800 aircraft entering the American Airlines fleet and being retrofitted on existing aircraft.
This version of the 737-800 has 12 additional Economy seats, reduced seat pitch, thinner seats, a smaller bulkhead divider between the two cabins and two fewer cabinets behind the last row. The Economy seats on this version of the 737-800 are unique. This style of seat also features on Cathay Pacific and are not popular for long-haul flights. These seats do not recline but instead the seat bottom slides forward and the back slouches within a shell. The chair therefore does not recline backwards into the passenger behind which mitigates the 1 inch less of legroom.
These aircraft are not equipped with individual inflight entertainment. Overhead TV's are located in the cabin and it is difficult to view them from the window seats in Economy. The aisle seat is recommended for passengers wishing to watch inflight programming. In First Class, the FEBO (Front on Even Numbers flights and Back on Odd numbered flights) service pattern is used. This means that on flights with an even number, service begins from the front and vice versa. Being served first usually means choice of meals.
