GET A BETTER SEAT ON THE PLANE BY AVOIDING AIRLINES THAT OFFER ELITE TRAVEL STATUS

Now that we're in the days of SeatGuru and everyone knows which seats are best, the airlines are trying to capitalize on that. As a perk, they tend to offer the best seats to frequent fliers who are part of their elite travelers program before offering them to everyone else. This is great if you fly the same airline all the time, but, as the New York Times points out, if you're looking for a better seat you may want to avoid these airlines altogether. If you don't, the good seats may get snatched up before you even get an opportunity to select them.
