airberlin: Pet Policy

You must contact Air Berlin Reservations directly to make travel arrangements for your pet; space is often limited.

What methods of transport does airberlin provide for my pet?

  • Travel in the passenger cabin.
  • Checked as baggage in pressurized and temperature controlled area of your aircraft.

Does my pet qualify for travel in the passenger cabin?

Pets that meet the following qualifications can travel in the passenger cabin:

  • Pets must be carried in an enclosed container that is leak-proof and escape-proof.
  • You can take dogs and cats with you into the cabin if they are in a suitable pet carrier (max. measurements  22in x 16in x 8in/ 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and adequate ventilation) that weighs no more than 13lbs/ 6kg with contents.
  • The animal's head is not allowed to protrude from the pet carrier nor is the animal permitted to leave the carrier at any time during the flight.
  • Your itinerary does not include travel to the United Kingdom.
  • Your pet has all necessary health documents required by your destination (see below for more information).

Does my pet qualify for travel as checked baggage?

Pets that meet the following qualifications can travel as checked baggage:

  • Your itinerary does not include travel to the United Kingdom.
  • Your pet can comfortably remain in its kennel for the entire flight.
  • The kennel meets all requirements (see below for more information)
  • Your pet has all necessary health documents required by your destination (see below for more information).

What are the fees associated with pet transport?

  • Fee for animal in the passenger cabin (pets up to 13lbs/ 6kg): $40/ €30 for short and medium-haul flights, and $140/ €100 for long-haul flights.
  • Fee for animal checked as baggage (pets over 13lbs/ 6kg): $100/ €75 for short-haul and medium-haul flights, and $200/ €150 for long-haul flights.

What are the kennel requirements?

In addition to the size and weight maximums, the USDA and airberlin require that kennels meet the following requirements:

  • Be leak-proof and escape-proof.
  • Be properly ventilated, but not allow any part of the animal from protruding outside of the container.
  • Provide enough room for the animal to stand and turn around.
  • All carriers used to transport animals in the hold must have a water/feed container that can be filled from outside.

What health documentation is required?

Carriage of animals is governed by the IATA Live Animals Regulations, which airberlin will provide on request.
